IPFT Overview

The Institute of Pesticide Formulation Technology (IPFT) is an autonomous institution under the Department of Chemicals & Petrochemicals, Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers, Government of India, dedicated to advancing science, technology, and innovation in crop protection, formulation science, and sustainable agriculture. Established in 1991, IPFT has evolved into a premier national institution providing integrated research, regulatory support, analytical services, technology development, capacity building, and technology commercialization for the agrochemical and agricultural biotechnology sectors.

Recognized as an important constituent of the National Agricultural Research System (NARS), IPFT plays a strategic role in strengthening India’s agricultural innovation ecosystem through science-based solutions that promote productivity, sustainability, food safety, and environmental stewardship. The Institute undertakes multidisciplinary research encompassing pesticide formulation technology, analytical sciences, biosciences, biotechnology, nanotechnology, pesticide residue analysis, environmental safety, bio-efficacy evaluation, toxicology, regulatory science, advanced formulation engineering, and precision agriculture.

A major focus of the Institute is the development of next-generation bio-based agricultural inputs, including biopesticides, microbial formulations, botanical pesticides, biostimulants, biofertilisers, and advanced biological formulations. By integrating biotechnology with formulation science, process engineering, and advanced analytical tools, IPFT develops innovative products that enhance agricultural productivity while minimizing environmental impact and reducing dependence on conventional chemical inputs. In alignment with the Government of India’s BioE3 (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment and Employment) Policy, IPFT is expanding its capabilities in industrial biotechnology and sustainable biomanufacturing through the establishment of a state-of-the-art Biofoundry. The Institute is creating an integrated innovation ecosystem for the discovery, formulation, process optimization, scale-up, validation, and commercialization of bio-based agricultural products, thereby contributing to the national vision of a resilient bioeconomy, green manufacturing, climate-smart agriculture, and enhanced farmer prosperity.

IPFT serves as a trusted scientific partner to Government departments, regulatory authorities, academia, research institutions, startups, and the agrochemical industry by providing comprehensive research, testing, consultancy, training, and technology transfer services. Its state-of-the-art laboratories, pilot-scale formulation facilities, advanced analytical instrumentation, and field research infrastructure support the complete innovation value chain—from concept and laboratory research to validation, pilot-scale production, commercialization, and regulatory compliance.

The Institute has established internationally recognized quality systems and scientific capabilities. IPFT is NABL accredited (ISO/IEC 17025) for a wide range of analytical services, OECD Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) certified by the National GLP Compliance Monitoring Authority (NGCMA), and recognized by the Central Insecticides Board & Registration Committee (CIB&RC) for generation of regulatory data required for pesticide registration. The Institute has also been notified by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Government of India, as an authorized laboratory for biostimulant testing under the Fertilizer (Control) Order through Gazette Notification. In addition, IPFT is an APEDA-recognized laboratory for pesticide residue analysis in agricultural and processed food products, supporting India’s agricultural exports by ensuring compliance with international food safety standards.

IPFT has also earned international recognition for its excellence in advanced analytical sciences and chemical safety. The Institute actively contributes to the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) through research, analytical method development, proficiency testing, and capacity building. IPFT has consistently participated in the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Proficiency Testing Programme and achieved an ‘A’ Rating in the 59th OPCW Proficiency Test, reflecting its world-class analytical capabilities and commitment to international quality standards. Further strengthening its global engagement, IPFT has been selected by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), The Hague, The Netherlands, to conduct the Advanced Analytical Skills Development Course (ASDC) for scientists nominated by OPCW Member States. Through cutting-edge research in high-resolution mass spectrometry, chromatography, chemical forensics, and trace-level analysis, the Institute supports national regulatory agencies, international treaty obligations, and global chemical safety initiatives.

Innovation remains central to IPFT’s mission. The Institute develops advanced formulation technologies that improve product efficacy, enhance stability and delivery, reduce environmental impact, promote safer handling, and encourage the adoption of sustainable crop protection solutions. Emerging research areas include nano-enabled formulations, smart delivery systems, microbial consortia, advanced analytical sciences, artificial intelligence-enabled research, precision agriculture, and digital technologies for modern agriculture.

Beyond research, IPFT is committed to developing highly skilled human resources and strengthening India’s scientific ecosystem. The Institute offers doctoral (Ph.D.) programmes in collaboration with premier academic institutions, enabling scholars to undertake interdisciplinary research under the guidance of experienced scientists. Through specialized training programmes, workshops, internships, and capacity-building initiatives, IPFT nurtures researchers, students, regulators, entrepreneurs, and industry professionals.

As part of its outreach mission, IPFT regularly conducts Farmer Awareness Programmes across the country to promote the safe and judicious use of pesticides, integrated pest management, biopesticides, biostimulants, and sustainable agricultural practices. The Institute also organizes Industry Interaction Meets, technical conclaves, stakeholder consultations, and national and international conferences that bring together scientists, policymakers, regulators, manufacturers, startups, and farmers to foster collaboration, accelerate innovation, and facilitate technology adoption.

Technology transfer remains one of IPFT’s defining strengths. The Institute has successfully developed and transferred numerous formulation technologies to the agrochemical industry, enabling commercialization of innovative products and strengthening India’s manufacturing capabilities. Through strategic collaborations with government agencies, universities, research institutions, international organizations, and industrial partners, IPFT continues to drive innovation-led growth and contribute to the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Guided by the principles of scientific excellence, innovation, integrity, sustainability, and societal impact, IPFT continues to shape the future of crop protection and agricultural biotechnology by delivering safe, effective, and environmentally responsible technologies. Through cutting-edge research, regulatory excellence, international collaborations, and stakeholder engagement, the Institute remains committed to enhancing food security, protecting the environment, empowering farmers, and positioning India as a global leader in sustainable agriculture and the bioeconomy.
